The spontaneous bioelectrical activity of the brain was studied during the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique by analog and digital spectral analysis. Time trends of spectral EEG content evaluated by Fourier and Walsh spectral arrays were compared with time domain descriptors. Both methods gave similar results in EEG dynamics staging. During Transcendental Meditation, high amplitude, symmetric theta activity in frontal areas was found. In this type of research where the correspondence between brain bioelectrical activity and the state of consciousness is studied, time domain descriptors are adequate. Hjorth parameters and Walsh spectral estimators are superior for on-line monitoring of EEG non-stationarity.
